This marked the end of the colonial era with Jomo Kenyatta acting as the First Prime Minster.

1,January,1964 Kenya becomes a Republic

Jomo Kenyatta becomes the first President of the Republic of Kenya while Oginga Odinga the first Vice President.

30,November,1965 Oginga Odinga Leaves Kenya African National Union for Kenya Peoples Union

This is after an Ideological split.

5,July,1969 Government minister Tom Mboya is Assasinated sparking Ethnic Unrest. KPU is Banned

Oginga Odinga is arrested in the event. Elections proceed with KANU as the only party contesting.

1971 President Nyerere of Tanzania Foils an attempt to overthrow Jomo Kenyatta

Kenyatta still retains his position

1972 Ronald Ngala dies on a road accident considered suspicious by many

Nobody was arrested or charged, and there was no inquiry.

5,November,1974 Jomo Kenyatta is re-elected as president unopposed.

This was his third term.

19,March,1975 Josiah Mwangi Kariuki is Murdered.

Government involvement was suspected.

22,August,1978 Mzee Jomo Kenyatta Dies at the Mombasa State House.

Death was due to natural causes attributable to old age. He was buried on 31 August 1978 in Nairobi in a state funeral.

14,October,1978 Moi becomes the 2nd President of Kenya

He had widespread support all over the country.

4,June,1982 Kenya Declared a One party state

This was by the National Assembly.

10,August,1982 Coup

The army suppressed a coup by the airforce. Hezekiah Ochuka rules for about six hours.

30,November,1986 Six opposition leaders form Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD)

This resulted in the party being outlawed and members arrested. Aid to Kenya was suspended by creditors

13,February,1990 Robert Ouko is Murdered.

The Government is suspected to have a hand in it.

December,1991 Multi-Party political system introduced.

This was due to external pressure on KANU and Moi

1992 Daniel Moi wins First multi-party elections

The opposition were united against Kanu

1997 Daniel Moin wins 1997 multi-party elections.

This was against a greatly ununited opposition.

2005 Draft constitution Rejected

This was by a 58% vote at a referendum against it.

December,2007 Mwai Kibaki re-elected as president for a second Term

Violence spread across the country resulting in 1000 deaths

2010 New Draft constitution is passed.

This was by a majority 68% in a referendum.

March,2013 Uhuru Kenyatta elected as kenyas 4th President.

This was by just over 50% votes. Challange of the results by Raila Odinga was rejected by the supreme court.

September,2013 Westgate mall terrorist Attack

Somali terrorist group Al Shabab claimed responsibility of the attack which claimed 74 lives.
